#11902 Increasing Rigor in Math Class

Many teachers assume that rigor in mathematics class means “really hard problems” or “story problems at the end of a lesson.” Increasing rigor in math lessons, however, can often be accomplished by implementing simple teaching strategies at the beginning stages of a lesson or unit. These simple strategies work to activate students’ critical thinking and creativity, increasing rigor early in the teaching process, rather than later. Higher levels of rigor at an early stage help students to engage more meaningfully and more successfully with those “really hard problems” in the later stages. In this workshop, participants will learn about several simple strategies for increasing rigor and will prepare to apply those strategies to upcoming lessons in their classroom.
