Creating Student-Led Learning Environments in 10 Steps

Using standards to drive a student-led classroom may seem like an oxymoron. However, there are many research-based instructional practices that fit a standards-driven curriculum or program and are well-suited for all learners in becoming independent. When teachers design student-driven classrooms and help students understand and apply the qualities of good learners, students begin to take responsibility for their learning, increasing their drive, motivation, and achievement. This interactive workshop will use John Hattie’s research on effective influences on achievement as the anchor for providing an overview of the 10 steps necessary in creating a student-led learning environment. Connections to the Danielson Framework will be discussed.

A Focus on Using Rubrics and Success Criteria to Drive Student Practice and Feedback

These 3 simple questions can be applied to both teacher teams and students in the classroom to drive
everything that Is effective and evidence-based in education. In this workshop, attendees will take a deep dive into practical classroom strategies that transform classrooms into spaces in which students take charge of their own learning. Specifically, attendees will develop learning intentions and success criteria both within, and independent of, rubrics and learn how to incorporate them as formative assessments that students use for self-evaluation. Exemplars, daily practice and relevant student feedback will be fully integrated within the workshop tasks.
